Asia: southwestern China, northern Burma, and southeastern Tibet. They have been introduced to parts of the United Kingdom.
High elevations of 6,000-15,000 feet in rocky mountain ridges. In areas that are barren except for growth of scrub bamboo and low growing shrubs.
Diurnal, spending most of the day on the ground, foraging for food.
Omnivorous, feeding on the ground for seeds, berries, roots, leaves, flowers, stems, buds, tubers, and insects.
