Behind the Scenes Tours

Zoo Boise is now offering special behind the scenes tours. This is your chance to get up-close with some of your favorite Zoo Boise animals, including: giraffes, penguins, anteaters, Mr. Mac (Aldabra tortoise), and more.

Behind the Scene Tours – Close Encounters of the Wild Kind

Giraffe Behind the Scenes Tour

Get up-close and personal with the tallest animal on land, with a private behind the scenes giraffe tour. Not only will you get to meet and feed the Zoo Boise giraffes, but you’ll learn how the giraffes are taken care of by one of our staff members.

Available everyday at 11am or 3pm:

  • Cost – $25 for first person, $15 for each additional person
  • Maximum Group Size –  6 people
  • Minimum Age – 2 years
  • Length – 30 minutes
  • Adult to Child Ratio – 1:3
  • Touching – No
  • Feeding – Yes
  • Zoo admission is required and is NOT included with Behind the Scenes Tours

Penguin Behind the Scenes Tour

Get the best view of Zoo Boise’s Magellanic penguin colony, from inside the exhibit on a private behind the scenes tour. Not only will you get to meet and feed the Zoo Boise penguins, but you’ll learn how the penguins are taken care of by one of our staff members.

Available everyday at 11am or 3pm. Not available on pool cleaning days or during nesting/molting season.

Mr. Mac Meet & Greet (Aldabra Tortoise)

Come meet our favorite Zoo Boise resident, Mr. Mac, a 375 pound Aldabra tortoise on a private behind the scenes tour. Not only will you get to meet and touch Mr. Mac, but you’ll learn how he’s taken care of by one of our staff members.

Available daily at 10:30am:

  • Cost – $20 for first person, $10 for each additional person
  • Maximum Group Size –  6 people
  • Minimum Age – 2 years
  • Length – 20 minutes

Anteater Behind the Scenes Tour

Are you ready to meet and feed a giant anteater? You can go on a private behind the scenes tour with one of our staff members and feed one of the anteaters yogurt. Available March and April 2018, but not during the summer, while we are building a new anteater exhibit.

Available Friday, Saturday, or Sunday at 3:30pm:

  • Cost – $30 for first person, $20 for each additional person
  • Maximum Group Size –  4 people

Cotton-Top Tamarin Training

Come to the zoo before we open and observe a private cotton-top tamarin training. You and your group will get to watch a training session and have your questions answered by one of our staff members.

Available Sunday and Monday at 8:30am/9:30am (depending on season):

  • Cost – $15 for first person, $5 for each additional person
  • Maximum Group Size – 8 people
  • Minimum Age – None
  • Length – 20-30 minutes
  • Adult to Child Ratio – 1:4
  • Touching – No
  • Feeding – No
  • Since training takes place before the zoo opens, if you choose to visit the zoo afterwards, you’ll need to pay for admission after the training or show your membership card to the admissions attendant
  • Close toed shoes are required (no sandals, flip-flops, etc.)

Create an Animal Enrichment

Join one of our staff members to make an enrichment for your favorite Zoo Boise animal and then watch as the animal interacts with it. Enrichment is important, because it encourages the animals to use their natural behaviors and abilities.

Available Animals (Pick One): Red Fox, Parakeet, Patas Monkeys, Servals, Bat-Eared Fox, Indian Flying Fox, Coati, Sloth Bear, Anteater, and Maned Wolf. If interested in an animal that is not listed, please let us know and we can see if it can be accommodated.

Behind the Scenes Tours Guidelines

  • Tours must be booked at least 1 week in advance.
  • If necessary, tours may be rescheduled based upon animal needs.
  • Tours can be rescheduled by the customer if cancellation needs to be made more than 24 hours in advance. With less than 24 hours’ notice, rescheduling and refunds are not available.
  • If a tour is cancelled due to animal issues and another date is not available, a refund will be given.
  • Gift certificates may be purchased online.
  • Zoo admission is not included with Behind the Scenes Tours and must be purchased separately.
  • Only one tour can be booked per day.
  • Close toed shoes are required (no sandals, flip-flops, etc.)
  • Guests are required to sign a waiver.
  • Pictures are welcomed, so bring your cameras!

When you register for a class or program with the Zoo Boise/City of Boise, this Personal Release Statement is implied: I understand that the registered activities and services may have an element of hazard or inherent danger and I take full responsibility for my actions and physical condition. I agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Friends of Zoo Boise, Zoo Boise, the City of Boise and its employees from any liability loss, cost or expense (including attorney’s fees, medical and ambulance costs) that I may incur while participating in the activities at the zoo. I give my consent to use any photographs or videotape taken of me in future promotional or marketing materials.
