We’ll be bringing African wild dogs, warthogs, baboons, spotted-necked otters, vervet monkeys, a Nile crocodile, giant African millipedes, and much more to Zoo Boise. In order to bring these animals, we’ll need to raise $70,000 to cover their purchase and transportation costs.
You might ask, where do we get new animals from? We are very careful about where our animals come from – we want to make sure they have been getting top-notch care, so we work primarily with other AZA accredited zoos. Costs for animals vary widely. If the animal is endangered, they cannot be sold, so those animals only have a transportation cost. The cost of other animals is up to the individual zoo to set, usually based on things like how many are available and other zoos’ exhibit plans.
You’ll be able to see these animals in the upcoming Gorongosa National Park and Annamite Mountain exhibits, which construction will begin on in March 2018.
If you make a donation of $50 or more by December 31, we’ll enter you into a drawing to win a Behind the Scenes encounter for up to 6 people with our new giraffe and the opportunity to work with a zookeeper to create an enrichment activity for the red panda cubs.
