The Boise Foothills is the backdrop of our amazing community! It’s full of recreational opportunities and is home to a variety of wildlife.
In 2016, an illegal firework started a fire in the Boise Foothills. The blaze consumed over 2,500 acres of land, destroyed homes and Boise’s famous Table Rock trail, and decimated vital habitat that local wildlife depend on to survive. The fire was a devastating tragedy. To help this special place recover, Zoo Boise, the City of Boise, and partners including U.S. Bank are working together to make the Boise Foothills even greater than they were before.
The Boise Foothills are full of amazing plants and animals, including mule and white-tailed deer, badgers, coyote, butterflies, red fox, and many other mammals, reptiles, insects, and birds. The problem is that the Foothills are plagued with invasive plant species like cheatgrass. These plants suffocate the native vegetation that many wildlife depend on in the winter to survive. They also greatly increase the frequency, intensity, and speed of wildfires.
In 2016, The Friends of Zoo Boise was the first to donate to the Foothills Restoration Project. We donated $100,000 and pledged an additional $250,000 over the following five years for a total of $350,000. Those funds will be used to remove the invasive plants, grow native vegetation, and plant them in the Foothills. This collaboration is truly an example of how our community can come together to turn a negative into a positive.
When you visit Zoo Boise, part of your admission goes to protect animals all over the world, including the Foothills Restoration Project. Just by visiting the zoo, YOU are helping to protect our precious Foothills and the animals that call it home. With YOUR support and the support of Zoo Boise, the City of Boise, community partners, and Zoo Boise sponsors like U.S. Bank – we are helping to revitalize the Boise Foothills.
