Zoo Boise Mourns the Loss of Red Panda Spud
[February 11, 2025] Zoo Boise is deeply saddened to share that Spud, the zoo’s 14-year-old male red panda, has passed away. As one of the oldest red pandas in an AZA-accredited zoo, Spud received specialized and dedicated attention from our animal care and veterinary teams throughout his life. Due to a recent decline in his health due to age-related issues, the tough decision was made to humanely euthanize him. “The loss of this incredible animal is felt by all of Zoo Boise’s staff, volunteers, and visitors, as he was an amazing ambassador for his species,” said Boise Parks and Recreation Director Doug Holloway. “We appreciate the community’s support during this difficult time.” Spud was born in 2010 at the Potawatomi Zoo in Indiana. He joined the Zoo Boise family in 2018 and immediately became a beloved member of our family, captivating guests with his curious nature and playful personality. He also played a vital role in red panda conservation as part of the Red Panda Species Survival Plan, fathering several cubs and contributing to the future of his species.
