[February 11, 2025] Zoo Boise is deeply saddened to share that Spud, the zoo’s 14-year-old male red panda, has passed away. As one of the oldest red pandas in an AZA-accredited zoo, Spud received specialized and dedicated attention from our animal care and veterinary teams throughout his life. Due to a recent decline in his health due to age-related issues, the tough decision was made to humanely euthanize him.
“The loss of this incredible animal is felt by all of Zoo Boise’s staff, volunteers, and visitors, as he was an amazing ambassador for his species,” said Boise Parks and Recreation Director Doug Holloway. “We appreciate the community’s support during this difficult time.”
Spud was born in 2010 at the Potawatomi Zoo in Indiana. He joined the Zoo Boise family in 2018 and immediately became a beloved member of our family, captivating guests with his curious nature and playful personality. He also played a vital role in red panda conservation as part of the Red Panda Species Survival Plan, fathering several cubs and contributing to the future of his species. Spud’s immense impact will continue to be felt for generations to come.
“I am grateful for the respect our care team has for each and every animal that calls Zoo Boise home,” added Zoo Boise Director Gene Peacock. “Saying goodbye is never easy, but we will be forever grateful for Spud’s impact on Boise, the Treasure Valley, and Idaho.”
While we will deeply miss Spud, we take comfort in knowing he inspired so many to learn more about red pandas and the importance of protecting them in the wild. We appreciate the support of our community and invite those who wish to honor Spud’s memory to share their favorite moments with us through a comment, message, or card.
