[OCT. 2024] Zoo Boise, a division of Boise Parks and Recreation, is sad to share news of the peaceful passing of Vinnie, a 12-year-old male warthog, due to ongoing health issues related to his age.

Warthogs typically live 7-11 years in the wild, but can live into their teens under proper human care. Vinnie passed away peacefully in his sleep, and while it is always difficult to say goodbye to a beloved member of our family, the zoo team takes comfort in knowing that he lived a full and happy life while inspiring many people.

Vinnie arrived at Zoo Boise in 2019 in anticipation of the opening of the Gorongosa National Park exhibit. Throughout his time in Boise, he brought joy to both staff members and guests through his unique personality and charm.

“Vinnie was a beloved member of our Zoo Boise family who touched the hearts of many,” said Boise Parks and Recreation Director Doug Holloway. “We are grateful for the years we got to enjoy his presence at the zoo and appreciate all he did to further our education and conservation goals.”

As Vinnie aged, he developed arthritis in three of his legs, a condition that required specialized care. Zoo Boise’s dedicated animal care team worked closely with him, providing treatments including braces, steroid injections, and pain medications to ensure his comfort. Zoo staff also cared for Vinnie by providing his medications inside his favorite treat, a tortilla dipped in peanut butter and covered in melon sauce. His willingness, bravery, and cooperation during these routines meant a lot to everyone who worked with him.

“Vinnie’s wellbeing was always our top priority and our zookeepers went above and beyond to care him,” said Zoo Boise Director Gene Peacock. “Staff worked tirelessly to ensure he lived his later years as comfortably as possible, and we will all miss him dearly.”

Zoo Boise remains committed to providing the highest quality of care for all its animals. The zoo team will continue to honor Vinnie’s memory by applying the same level of dedication to every animal who calls Zoo Boise home.
