[May 2, 2025] Zoo Boise saddened to share that Ndale, our male striped hyena, was recently humanely euthanized due to age-related quality of life concerns. Ndale was estimated to be over 20 years old and was well into his senior years. Throughout the aging process, our animal care team made thoughtful modifications to his care and habitat to support his comfort and wellbeing. He will be deeply missed by staff and guests alike.

Ndale made an impact not only here at Zoo Boise, but on a global stage for wildlife conservation. He was photographed by Joel Sartore for National Geographic’s Photo Ark project to represent his species. We’re honored to have been a part of his story. Thank you for helping us provide Ndale with dedicated care, and for supporting conservation with every visit to Zoo Boise.

Zoo Boise is a division of Boise Parks and Recreation.
