Most of sub-Saharan Africa, from south of the Sahara Desert down to South Africa.

Life Expectancy

10-15 years in the wild. Females will generally live longer than males and have been known to thrive into their twenties under human care.

Lions are carnivores [meat eaters]. In the wild, they'll hunt and scavenge many types of prey. At Zoo Boise, they eat chunk meat, small whole prey, and a specialized feline ground meat.

Social Structure

In areas with plentiful food, prides can reach up to 30 members. Females typically stay in the group they're born in; males can take over other prides or form bachelor groups.
