The tallest creature on land, giraffes are great friends to have. Other animals will stay close to giraffes, who act as a lookout for many species in Africa.

You can feed our giraffes Tuesdays – Sundays from 11:30AM – 1:30PM during the Perkins Coie Giraffe Encounter!

Habitat

Spot giraffes naturally in (or above!) forests, shrublands, and the savanna.

Range

Giraffes can be found in pockets throughout Africa, but very disjointed.

Life Expectancy

15 to 20 years.

Diet

Giraffes will eat browse from trees all throughout the day. Acacia is a favorite plant in Africa, but at Zoo Boise, the boys enjoy elm.

Social Structure

Giraffes are loosely social. Females will form nursery herds where they can all watch over calves. Males will come together occasionally but also spend lots of time alone.
